Daily News: Budget Threatens After-School Programs
By Erin Durkin
Some 37,000 after school program seats are on the chopping block in Mayor Bloomberg’s latest proposed budget.
The $66 million cut to after school programs run by the Department of Youth and Community Development is part of an annual back and forth that has become something of a ritual between the mayor of the City Council, with the Council each year restoring some or all of the funding.
But advocates say that annual process obscures real cuts – with 35% fewer kids served by the Out of School Time program compared to 2008.
